New York-based AstraZeneca said Tuesday it will spend $2.1 billion on research to combat the heartburn risk from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), with a goal of $1.2 billion by the end of the year.
The $2.1 billion investment will come from Nexium, a generic drug launched in Europe in the late 1990s.
“Nexium is a great opportunity for AstraZeneca to accelerate the progress in the area of heartburn management with the launch of Zoloft,” AstraZeneca said in a statement.
The drug, which is marketed as Prilosec, is still under patent and is expected to be available in the US soon.
The New York-based company, which is based in Cambridge, Mass., will work on a research-based treatment for the condition, which affects about 40 million Americans. The research is expected to take place within the first year of its launch.
Esomeprazole, sold as Nexium and as Prilosec, is the most commonly prescribed drug in the US. The company has been trying to develop a generic version of the drug since 1999.
Esomeprazole is a widely used acid reducer and is available as an oral tablet and as an injection. It is available as a liquid, and is typically taken two to three times a day.
Nexium’s patent expired in 2010, but other generic drugs remain available.
In a statement, AstraZeneca said: “We have been working to develop a new treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) which may offer a new way to treat patients with GERD who do not respond to previous acid-regulating drugs.
“We are committed to ensuring that our patients with GERD will not need to stop taking acid-suppressing drugs to prevent heartburn or other symptoms.”
The company said the research will enable it to continue to develop the drug and will continue to manufacture the product until the end of the year.
